Lieutenant Captain Jonathan Pavel is stuck. His career was in limbo due to bureaucratic inertia and the petty retribution of small minded politicians. Meanwhile, storm clouds are gathering. Following the New Helsinki incident, tensions are building between the Solarian Republic and the Colonial Confederacy. A campaign of nationalistic and jingoistic zeal has delivered power in the Confederacy to those who would have war with the Republic. Despite twenty years of peace, the Solarians are not unprepared but overconfidence breeds complacency. The Solarians and their sprawling mercantile empire may not be as prepared for the onslaught of the highly industrialized Colonial Confederacy, and the recently modernized and expanded Colonial Fleet. If he does manage to shake himself from the mire and win a command, Jonathan will need to use every fiber of his being to guide his ship and its crew through the coming storm, and show the universe once more why the Solarian Navy is built around a Heart of Steel.
Come, cheer up, my lads, 'tis to glory we fly,
To add something more to these victorious years.
To honour we call you, as free men not slaves,
For who are more free than the sons of the stars?
Heart of steel are our ships,
Solid lads are our men,
We always are ready Steady, boys, Steady!
We'll fight and we'll win again and again.
-Solarian Navy March

Very good story, good plot and believable characters. Unfortunately layout and detail are a killer. I read ten pages before a paragraph break, which gave me a condensed history, then two or three pages of activity before another ten page paragraph of history and background. I bought the second book because I did like the story, but to say that it would be a disaster for the orbital elevator to be destroyed is one thing, but to then go on in detail to describe the impact and what would be required to fix it, then later to describe basically the same thing in a different context becomes boring, meaning I skip pages and miss something then don't bother buying.any more. Which would be a shame, because the books are potentially equal to some of the best space opera. Remember, reading is about the imagination - some people like detail, but yours reads like an encyclopaedia with grammatical, paragraph and punctuation errors.Product details

Heart of Steel Book II of the Jonathan Pavel Series eBook JS Hawn Reviews
I am always impressed with the level of world building this author puts into his work. The specificity and detail reveal the depth to which the author let his creativity take him in inventing this incredibly realistic, future world. It's so easy to get lost in the text and feel like you are present with the characters.
An enjoyable story and worth reading. I liked how the characters have been developed. I didn't read the first book but I was able to catch up quickly, which is a good thing as this is a pretty fast paced book. There were a couple of places where the story bogged down when describing some of the history or science behind this book.
Wow. This second book was well worth the read.
My thanks to the author for a gift copy of this book; and my hats off to him for his story telling gift.
He has given us a sci fi space opera filled with characters the reader can cheer for or "boo,".humorous interactions, and action, all set forth in a well developed world (or system of worlds) and universe. Some of the story contains the standard cliches found in the genre, but used in ways to support the story, not just filler. There were still a few punctuation issues, but they were few.
Looking forward to the next book.
The plot could have been done in 50 pages. The descriptions and excruciating prose did nothing to advance the story. Enough with the political narrative, it became repetitive. You should have an aside to explain political lives in each system. I'd think you smart to know that we do not need you to lecture us about what politics entail.
Very immersive, after a few pages in you'll turnaround and find yourself in a completely different universe. Anybody who has any appreciation for sci-fi needs to read this immediately.
Good story, great level of detail. Pretty easy to get into and enjoyable from start to finish. Could use a bit of editing to help clean it up but it doesn't really bother me and doesn't take away from anything. Can't wait to see what's next from JS.
Jonathan Pavel's story continues in JS Hawn's excellent sequel to his original work. Exciting and enjoyable, greatly worth the read and at an excellent price!
